What to do? What to do!

The other day I was playing with some solids and ended up making some wonky log cabin
squares.  I ended up with this wall hanging that I really like.  I think it will replace the Picasso print that has been over the fireplace forever.  I have only made one other quilt that I wanted to hang so this is new to me.

I need advice on how to quilt this .  I am leaning to doing a crosshatch over the entire piece so the quilting won't make it too busy.  But maybe I should pebble or something like that  and use black in the black, grey in the grey and white in the white, that way the thread color won't have a life of its own.

Any comments would be appreciated.  At this point I would love lots of ideas.

  1. I love the graphic look of this piece. Were you inspired by anything in particular, say a verse or poem? I think it would be very slick with simple outline stitching around the various blocks and then in the larger spaces spell out a verse or maybe just inspirational words.

  2. Hey, me again, anonymous (I couldn't get my tagline to take). I'd love to see a tutorial of how you pieced this also. It could be really nice in a red, white, and blue piece I try to come up with every year for our Fall United Way Fundraiser.

    You can call me Kat.

  3. How about a square spiral in each block using a mid-value grey thread? Maybe an irregular spiral in each block.

Or how about lines in a mid-value grey radiating from the center of each block to the perimeter - so that you have a square sunburst?

Wow! makes me want to make a series of log cabin quilts from scraps and quilt each one differently.

  4. What a beautiful graphic piece! I'm only a very basic, stitch-in-the-ditch machine quilter, but I think stitching in the piece lines would enhance the geometry.

  5. I've always loved the look of a very geometric piecing pattern with a very curvy circular quilting pattern. It tends to give the piecing movement and life. Something as simple as concentric circles, but not set on each square, slightly off-set so that the viewer looks at two complimentary but different design structures.

  6. I was once told that if you have a very linear quilt, you should quilt it with curves/circles. I like Judie B's idea of setting the circles off center. Beautiful quilt. would love the pattern!

  7. Another vote for Judie B's idea of circles. I love that graphic quilt. It will make a great piece of wall art!

  8. Hi Mary, and first thanks for visiting my blog. I love to do free motion quilting. I also think it depends what kind of batting one uses for the effect.
I personally use warm and white as it's just got the best feel for my free motion style.
I love the blocks. Are you putting any say, yellor or red to just pop this out?
